Remember to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Test smoke alarms every month and replace 9-volt smoke alarm batteries at least once every year. Smoke alarms do not last forever. Get new smoke alarms every 10 years, unless your alarms have been rated for more than 10 years. Check the labels on the back of each device to be sure.
Be sure fire alarms are installed to code, with alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area. Put alarms on every level of the home.
Have an evacuation plan that includes at least two exits and a meeting place outside your home.
Install carbon monoxide detectors on each level of your home.
