Wider West Shore span over the Harvey Taylor Bridge Bypass will include turn lane.
Work has begun to clear areas behind the guiderail on the embankment near the Erford Road bridge over the Harvey Taylor Bridge Bypass in preparation for the removal and replacement of the bridge superstructure in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County.
PennDOT awarded the $7,789,631 design-build superstructure replacement contract to J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, Chester County, in which the contractor has been responsible for some of the design requirements for the removal of the existing 66-year-old two-lane three-span continuous steel I-beam bridge and the construction of a new wider bridge superstructure that will accommodate two through lanes and a center-turn lane, and realignment of the roadway and ramps.
Work this fall will focus on preparations to demolish, remove and replace the superstructure under staged construction, etc. The initial clearing and embankment work should have minimal impact to traffic. PennDOT advises travelers that they will encounter shoulder restrictions beginning in late September once the contractor sets barrier both on the shoulders of the bypass and on the bridge. In early October, the contractor will begin demolition of the existing bridge. Two ten-foot-wide travel lanes will be maintained on the bridge during this first stage of the project.
PennDOT advises travelers that the contractor will not restrict travel lanes weekdays on Erford Road between 6:00 AM and 8:30 AM, and between 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM, or on the bypass between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. More information on specific changes to existing traffic patterns will be provided as construction progresses. This portion of Erford Road, officially designated as State Route 1025, averages more than 11,745 vehicles traveled daily.
Motorists are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones, not only for their safety, but for the safety of the road crews.
